Letting Go of the Handles
So far, you have used the warm-up and cool-down to help you carve some special time out of ordinary life—some time out of time—in which to find something extraordinary. With the warm-up you said, “Here comes something special,” and with the cool-down you said, “That was really something else.” But we can get too dependent on rituals, and in this chapter, you will learn to do without them.
Letting go of rituals can trigger some anxiety. Without the rituals, you might worry, there will be nothing to frame or circumscribe your experience of peacefulness. There will be no “before” and no “after.” You might even start to wonder why you’re not having this experience all the time. What is holding you back from entering a state of serenity whenever you want? What is stopping your whole life from being inherently peaceful? Well, that is precisely why we drop the ritual: to bring up these questions.
Dropping the ritual helps you realize that life is even better when it’s not carved up into units. Dropping the ritual helps you find the extraordinary in the ordinary, and even better, to realize that ordinary life is itself, already, extraordinary. Dropping the ritual helps you realize that the only difference between the ordinary and the extraordinary is how you focus your attention, how you perceive things, and how you choose to experience time. Dropping the ritual means that you might be able to choose to be more peaceful, right now, without needing any special preparations or conditions. Can you handle that?
